Blinged-out Benz: Mercedes to offer illuminated star emblem [Video]

Mercedes’ accessory division has given Benz owners a new way to add a bit of nocturnal bling by creating an illuminated version of the automaker’s three-pointed star.

Available only on models with a grille-mounted badge (as opposed to the more formal hood-top emblem), the star uses optical fiber and LED technology to ensure that passerby are aware that they in the presence of a Mercedes.

Notably, the system is never active when the car is in motion. Instead, it lights up only when the car is unlocked, its engine is turned off or its doors or trunk are opened, and remains on for 15 seconds.

The shining star can currently be spec’d on the M-Class and GL-Class crossovers, although Mercedes-Benz Accessories has plans to expand availability to the C-Class, E-Class and CLS-Class four-doors beginning next month.

Those looking to push the boundaries of illumination, brand recognition and good taste can purchase the emblem for $394.
