The so-called Mayan apocalypse has come and gone without drama, but if any truly serious doomsday scenarios crop up in the future, we know exactly what vehicle we want in our driveway: Mercedes-Benz’s wild new G63 AMG 6x6.
Originally designed for the Australian military, the uber-gelandewagen is essentially a lengthened and strengthened G63 AMG with a pickup bed and no less than six wheels. Mercedes plans to build 20 to 30 units annually starting this fall, and while pricing has yet to be finalized, each will likely command well north of $400,000.
One look at the hulking G63 AMG 6x6 suggests that it will essentially be unstoppable off road, and the specs certainly seem to back that impression up: its arsenal includes five differential locks, low-range gearing, an air-pressure control system for its massive 37-inch wheels and 18.1 inches of ground clearance (9.8 inches more than the standard model).
Although the military version uses Mercedes’ 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, the six-wheeled G-Wagon will be offered to civilians with AMG’s 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It produces 536 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, enough to propel the 8,322-pound brute from zero-to-60 mph in under six seconds. Shifting duties are handled by a reinforced five-speed automatic.
The cabin is essentially standard G63 AMG fare save for the rear, where the standard bench seat has been swapped out for two AMG sports seats mounted farther aft than normal for extra legroom. The pickup bed is lined in polished bamboo and can hold a 1,433-pound payload.
